Difference between Translators and Interpreters

The key difference between translation and interpretation lies within the choice of communication channel. While translation deals with written communication, interpretation deals with oral communication.

Translators work on written documents, whereas interpreters work in circumstances that require live translation; for example conferences and business meetings, medical appointments, legal proceeding, etc.

Good interpreters are endowed with very quick reflexes, as well as good memory and speaking voice. An interpreter act also as a facilitator between the speaker and the listener, both linguistically and diplomatically.

All the interpreters that work for us have a diploma from a recognised and prestigious interpretation school and also a good experience and references.

Business Interpreters

This is the usual service for small groups, in which the interpreter listens to the speaker and translates face-to-face, after a short interval of time. The business interpreter acts as an intermediary between the speaker and the listener (or listeners). He/she is required to translate to and from both languages.

Medical Interpreters

Medical interpreting encompasses a variety of situations: routine consultation with a physician, specialist appointments, support for minor hospital procedures, as well as emergency procedures and other situations. This service is performed when doctors and patients speak different languages, and clear and thorough communication is needed. Medical interpreters are generally highly specialised in the medical field and, just like doctors, are required to keep a strict level of confidentiality on anything discussed during consultation.

Legal Interpreters

Legal interpreting takes place in a legal setting such as a courtroom or an attorney's office, in which activities or proceedings related to law are conducted. Interpreters translate a few sentences at a time for their audience, alternating with the person who is talking, for maximum clarity. In addition to mastery of the source and target language, legal interpreters need an excellent working knowledge of law and court protocol.

Whispering Interpreting

Chuchotage is a technique that consists of whispering the content of an ongoing conversation, meeting or speech into the ear of the recipient.

The interpreter is situated close to listener, and will whisper the translation to them while the speaker(s) continue to talk. The interpreter will render an accurate summary of what is being said, rather than producing a verbatim translation. This can only be truly effective if only a single listener requires interpretation.
